GNM has completed a significant expansion of its European optical transport network by extending its dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) backbone from Sweden to the Balkans, introducing fully diverse new routes designed to enhance regional connectivity and operational resilience.

The upgrade includes a modernization of the Frankfurt–Kista corridor, where GNM’s Kista node underwent a comprehensive hardware and rack-level refresh. This enhancement increases available bandwidth, reduces energy consumption, and improves overall efficiency across Northern Europe.

Simultaneously, GNM launched a new DWDM line connecting Bratislava to Sofia through two distinct paths – one passing through Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, and the other through Romania. The routes converge in Sofia, forming a scalable, high-capacity North-Southeast corridor that positions the Bulgarian capital as a critical interconnection point for traffic from the Balkans, Turkey, and the Middle East.

Alex Surkov, GNM’s Head of Development, noted the strategic importance of the upgrade: “We’re strengthening the backbone for regional transit and future growth by connecting Northern and Southeastern Europe through diverse, high-capacity links.”

The expansion responds to growing demand from regional carriers, content delivery networks, and digital platform providers seeking low-latency, high-availability infrastructure across Europe.
